Short answer: Kenya’s official eTA portal lists a travel itinerary showing arrival and departure among the documents you need when you apply, together with an accommodation booking confirmation. In practice that means you need a dated exit from Kenya when you apply, and airlines may check it at boarding. If you plan to leave by air, a confirmed onward or return flight is the cleanest proof; while plans are open, a verifiable onward reservation can show the departure date on the application, but you need a usable ticket for the flight you actually take.
Kenya replaced most visas with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), and the application asks more about the trip than many travellers expect. Two items on the official list matter for exit proof: a travel itinerary with arrival and departure, and an accommodation booking confirmation.
This guide covers what the eTA portal says, what counts as exit proof for Kenya, how overland exits to Tanzania or Uganda fit in, what airlines check, and how to keep the eTA, onward record and lodge bookings in step. It is about onward and exit proof, not general eTA eligibility.
Key facts
- The eTA portal lists a valid passport (6 months, one blank page), a photo, contact details, a travel itinerary (arrival and departure), an accommodation booking confirmation and a payment method.
- Purpose-specific documents are added for some trips, such as a hospital referral for medical travel or an invitation for conferences.
- Applications are generally processed within three business days (72 hours); an expedited option is available.
- Fees start at USD 30 for normal processing, with an additional USD 100 for expedited processing, according to the portal’s FAQ.
- The eTA allows you to travel; admission is decided on arrival.
- Kenya’s eTA site says all visitors, including infants and children, must have an approved eTA before the start of their journey unless exempt under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
- The eTA FAQ says fees start at USD 30 for normal processing, with an expedited option at an additional USD 100.
- The U.S. Department of State says US travellers’ passports must be valid 6 months beyond arrival in Kenya with 2 blank pages, and that proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country.

Official-source check: Kenya’s official eTA "How to apply" page and eTA FAQs, run by the Directorate of Immigration Services, list the required documents, including the travel itinerary with arrival and departure and accommodation confirmation, plus processing times and fees. Apply only through etakenya.go.ke.
Reviewed for: Kenya eTA document list, arrival and departure itinerary, accommodation confirmation, overland exits, airline checks and onward reservation versus issued ticket.
The official list does not use the words "onward ticket", but it asks for a travel itinerary with a departure. For most visitors that departure is a flight, so the question becomes what form the flight record should take at each stage.
What Does Kenya’s eTA Ask For on Exit Proof?
The eTA portal’s "How to apply" page says you should have the following when you apply: a valid passport with at least six months’ validity and one blank page, a selfie or passport-type photo, contact details, a travel itinerary showing arrival and departure, an accommodation booking confirmation and a payment method. Additional documents apply for some travel purposes, such as a referral letter for medical visits or an invitation letter for conferences.
The itinerary requirement is the exit-proof question. A departure date and means of leaving have to exist on paper when you apply, not just when you land.
What this means: Show how and when you leave Kenya. A return flight, an onward flight to a third country or an overland exit plan with dates can all describe the departure, but the record should be real and match your accommodation dates.

A DummyFlights reservation costs $15 per person, carries a PNR valid for 48-72 hours and comes with free date changes within the same day of booking. Because the PNR window is short, issue it close to when you submit the eTA, and plan to buy the real ticket for the flight you take.
How Do Overland Exits Fit In?
Many Kenya itineraries continue by road to Tanzania or Uganda. The eTA itinerary can describe that, but airlines flying you into Nairobi may still look for a flight out, because a bus ticket is harder for them to verify. If your exit is overland, carry the bus or tour booking with dates, the next country’s visa or e-visa where needed, and be ready to explain the route.
For the East African Tourist Visa and similar regional arrangements, check the official conditions of each country before relying on them for exit proof.
What Do Airlines Check Before Flying You to Kenya?
Airlines check that you hold the travel documents Kenya requires, which means your eTA approval and passport validity, and they may ask how you are leaving. A one-way ticket with no exit record is the most common trigger for questions at check-in. Our guide on who checks onward tickets, airline or immigration explains why carriers ask.
-
Have the eTA approval printed and offline.
-
Carry the exit record whose date matches the eTA itinerary.
-
Carry your first-night accommodation confirmation.
-
If your exit is overland, carry the booking and next-country documents.
How Do You Keep the eTA, Exit Record and Lodges in Step?
-
Fix your arrival and departure dates first.
-
Book or reserve accommodation that covers those nights, including safari lodges or camps.
-
Issue or buy the exit record for the departure date.
-
Submit the eTA with those documents, allowing for processing time.
-
If dates change after approval, check whether the eTA details need updating before you travel.
Our page on return, open-jaw and multi-city tickets as proof of exit helps if you arrive in Nairobi and leave from Mombasa or another country.
What Does an Example Kenya Record Set Look Like?
Maya, travelling from Mumbai, plans eight nights: three in Nairobi, three in the Maasai Mara and two in Mombasa, then flies to Zanzibar. Her eTA upload contains her passport, photo, an itinerary showing arrival in Nairobi and departure from Mombasa to Zanzibar, and accommodation confirmations for the hotel and the lodge. Before she flies, she buys the Mombasa to Zanzibar ticket and checks Tanzania’s entry rules for Zanzibar.
Who Needs a Kenya eTA, and Who Is Exempt?
The official eTA site’s how-to-apply page says all visitors, including infants and children, who intend to travel to Kenya must have an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before the start of their journey. It then lists the people exempt under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration (Amendment) Rules, 2025.

The lists are longer than the examples here and can change. Check your own nationality on the official site before you travel. If you are exempt, the length of the exemption becomes the limit your exit record must fit inside.
How Long Does the eTA Take and What Does It Cost?
The eTA FAQ says applications are generally processed within three business days or 72 hours, but may take longer depending on verification. For urgent applications an expedited option is processed immediately. Fees vary by type of travel application, with normal processing starting at USD 30 and expedited processing at an additional USD 100.

Because the FAQ lists a travel itinerary with arrival and departure among the typical documents, have your departure plan ready before you start the form, even on the expedited route. You are only allowed to travel after your application has been approved.
What Happens if You Are Only Transiting Nairobi?
The how-to-apply page lists, among those exempt, all passengers in transit through Kenya arriving and leaving by the same aircraft or transferring to another aircraft who do not leave the precincts of airports in Kenya. If you leave the airport, even for one night in a city hotel, you are no longer an airside transit passenger and need an eTA unless your nationality is exempt.
-
Airside connection on one ticket: carry the onward boarding pass or itinerary.
-
Overnight connection in an airport hotel airside: check with your airline whether you stay within the airport precincts.
-
Leaving the airport for a night in Nairobi: apply for an eTA, entering the onward flight as your departure.
-
Separate tickets with baggage recheck: you are likely to pass immigration, so plan for an eTA.
For a stopover, the onward flight is your departure record. It should leave within the time you enter on the eTA application.
How Do Families and Groups Apply?
The eTA FAQ says an eTA is required for each passenger when travelling as a group, and that you can select “Apply as a Group” when starting your application. Someone can apply on behalf of others, as long as the traveller’s information is provided and the application indicates it is made on their behalf. The how-to-apply page confirms that infants and children need an approved eTA too.

Make sure every traveller’s departure date and lodging dates match. A family where one child’s application shows a different departure date can face questions at the airline desk.
What If Your eTA Is Refused?
The eTA FAQ says that if your application is denied, you will not be able to travel to Kenya for the moment, and that you should contact the eTA support address to report your situation and obtain further details. It also says you can check the status of your application at any time on the official site.
-
Do not travel on the refused application.
-
Contact eTA support through the official site for details.
-
Check whether any information you entered was wrong, for example passport numbers or dates.
-
Correct your itinerary and accommodation details if they were incomplete.
-
Apply again only after you know what to fix.
What Do Three Kenya Exit Plans Look Like?
A Canadian couple on a 12-night safari and beach trip
Canada does not appear on the eTA exemption lists, so they apply for eTAs as a group. Their itinerary shows arrival in Nairobi, five nights in the Maasai Mara, six in Diani and a flight home from Mombasa. They upload lodge and hotel confirmations and their return ticket. Each eTA PDF is saved to their phones.
A Ghanaian trader on a 30-day business visit
Ghana appears in the group exempt for up to 90 days, so he does not need an eTA. He still carries his return ticket and hotel details, because the airline and the officer can ask about his stay, and his exit date is well inside 90 days.
An Indian traveller continuing overland to Tanzania
She applies for an eTA with arrival in Nairobi and a departure by road to Arusha. She keeps a bus booking and a flight home from Kilimanjaro, so she can show both how she leaves Kenya and how she leaves the region.

How Do Exemption Periods Shape Your Exit Date?
If your nationality is exempt, the exemption has a limit, and your exit record should fall inside it with some margin. The official eTA site gives three periods for exempt nationalities: up to 180 days for East African partner states, up to 90 days for one listed group and up to 60 days for a listed group of African countries.
|

|
Up to 180 days |
1 March |
Before 28 August |
Same, inside 180 days |
Count the arrival day as day one and leave a margin for delays. If your plans may run past the exemption, check the official site for what applies to longer stays before you travel, rather than relying on the exemption.
Why Should You Apply Only Through the Official eTA Channels?
The eTA FAQ says applications must be completed only through the official website or the “Kenya Travel Authorisation” official mobile application, and must be made for each individual who intends to travel. Look-alike sites that offer to “process” a Kenya eTA add fees and may collect passport data you cannot control.
-
Type etakenya.go.ke yourself instead of following an advert.
-
Pay only on the official site or app.
-
Keep the email confirming receipt of your application and the one confirming payment.
-
Save the approved eTA PDF to your phone or to the official app, and print a copy.
-
Track your application with the reference number on the official status page.
The approved eTA is the document you show at departure and arrival points. Keep it with your return or onward ticket so both are ready together at check-in.
What Does the eTA Form Ask For Besides Exit Proof?
The FAQ says requirements vary slightly by category but typically include a valid passport with at least 6 months validity and at least one blank page, a selfie or passport-type photo, contact details, a travel itinerary with arrival and departure, an accommodation booking confirmation and a payment method.
|

Getting these right the first time avoids a slow loop of corrections. The itinerary and accommodation lines are the ones that tie directly to your exit proof, so complete them last, once your departure date is fixed.
What Else Is Checked When You Land in Kenya?
The eTA and the exit record are only part of the arrival check. The U.S. Department of State’s Kenya page lists further entry points for US travellers that apply in practice to most visitors.

U.S. Department of State, October 2026 advisory |
Note: The eTA FAQ asks for one blank page; the State Department tells US citizens to have two. Carry two blank pages to be safe whichever passport you hold.
What Does Arriving From Rwanda, Uganda or Tanzania Change?
Many Kenya trips are part of a regional circuit. At the time of writing, the State Department’s Kenya page says travellers from Ebola-affected countries (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Uganda) and from countries it lists as elevated risk (including Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and Ethiopia) must complete an Electronic Traveler Health Surveillance Form before disembarking, and may be screened for temperature. A QR code for the form should be available from the airline or at the port of entry.
-
Ask your airline for the health form QR code before boarding.
-
Keep your eTA approval, the form confirmation and your exit record together.
-
If you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country, carry the yellow card.
-
Check the advisory again just before travel, as health measures change.
None of this replaces the exit record. An airline flying you from Kigali to Nairobi still checks the eTA and may ask how you will leave Kenya. Our guide to onward tickets for Rwanda covers the earlier leg of that circuit.
How Should Families Travelling With Children Prepare?
The State Department advises carrying a copy of each child’s birth certificate or other evidence of your legal relationship, and says a notarised consent letter from the absent parent may be required when one parent travels alone with a child. It also says Kenyan authorities have sometimes stopped US citizen minors from leaving when travelling without a parent or guardian.
|
Situation |
Carry |
|---|---|
|
Both parents travelling |
Children’s eTAs, birth certificates, exit tickets in each child’s name |
|
One parent travelling |
The above, plus a notarised consent letter from the other parent or proof of sole custody |
|
Minor travelling without a parent |
Notarised written permission from a parent or guardian, plus the exit ticket |
The exit check matters on the way out too: a child who cannot show permission may be held back at departure. Keep the paperwork in the same folder as the return tickets.
How Do You Check a Safari Operator Before Paying?
Many Kenya itineraries are sold as safari packages that include airport transfers and lodges. The State Department reports US travellers whose operators did not meet them at the airport, did not book hotels as agreed or did not pay park fees. It advises checking for a licence from the Kenya Tourism Regulatory Authority, and notes that the Kenya Wildlife Service requires tour operators and safari lodges to carry insurance.
-
Ask for the operator’s Tourism Regulatory Authority licence number and check it.
-
Get written confirmation of each lodge and the dates, because the eTA asks for accommodation confirmation.
-
Ask whether the operator and lodges have the insurance KWS requires.
-
Make sure your exit flight matches the last day of the package.

Your Kenya eTA, Your Exit Date and the Flight You Take
Kenya’s eTA asks for an itinerary with a departure and for accommodation confirmation, so plan your exit before you apply. Use a real, dated exit record that matches your lodges, confirm with your airline what it accepts, and hold a usable ticket for the flight you actually board.
For the basics, see our guide to what an onward ticket is and why it is required.
Put your Kenya exit on paper. Match your departure date to your eTA itinerary and accommodation, then check what your airline accepts.
Review onward reservation optionsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Kenya require an onward ticket?
The eTA portal asks for a travel itinerary showing arrival and departure. In practice you need a dated exit plan, usually a return or onward flight.
Do I need hotel bookings for the Kenya eTA?
Yes. The portal lists an accommodation booking confirmation among the documents to have when you apply.
How long does the Kenya eTA take?
The portal says applications are generally processed within three business days, with an expedited option.
Can I leave Kenya by bus instead of flying?
You can describe an overland exit in your itinerary, but airlines flying you in may still ask for proof of departure. Carry the booking and the next country’s documents.
Is an onward reservation enough for the airline?
Some airlines accept a verifiable reservation and some want an issued ticket. Ask your airline before you travel.
Does an eTA guarantee entry to Kenya?
No. It authorises travel; the officer on arrival decides admission.
Can someone else apply for my Kenya eTA?
Yes. The eTA FAQ says someone can apply on your behalf if your information is provided and the application shows it is made on your behalf.
Where must I apply for a Kenya eTA?
The FAQ says only through the official website or the official Kenya Travel Authorisation mobile app.
Do children need a Kenya eTA?
Yes. The official eTA site says all visitors, including infants and children, need an approved eTA unless exempt.
How much does a Kenya eTA cost?
The eTA FAQ says fees start at USD 30 for normal processing, with an expedited option at an additional USD 100.
Do I need an eTA to transit Nairobi airport?
Passengers in transit who do not leave the airport precincts are exempt, according to the official eTA site. If you leave the airport, you need an eTA unless your nationality is exempt.
How many blank passport pages do I need for Kenya?
The eTA FAQ says at least one; the U.S. Department of State tells US travellers to have two. Carry two to be safe.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Kenya?
The State Department says you must show proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from an endemic country, or you may be denied entry.
Friendly reminder: Airline, visa and border rules can change. An approved eTA or a temporary reservation does not guarantee boarding or admission to Kenya. Follow the Directorate of Immigration Services’ and your airline’s current instructions for your nationality and route.
